Cabrillo helping students stay in school

Last year Cabrillo set a school record for student financial aid requests, and so far this year, they have already broken it by over 1,000

Cabrillo Vice President of Student Services, Dennis Bailey-Fougnier, says "Food and housing are barriers for students we have students who are living in their cars, or at the beach as you would in Santa Cruz, so yeah it's a huge problem."

Cabrillo College works closely with the Santa Cruz County human services department to be the liaison for students who need help with food or housing, all in an effort to keep people in class.

"A lot of people come here thinking they can get their tuition paid through Board of Governor waiver, but they still have to pay fees and feed themselves, and financial aid can't pay for all that, through public assistance we can help them get through the tough times," said Fougnier.

Early photos of Terry Medina have surfaced recently reports Rotary International. Apparently the case languished for many years until a young detective noticed the similarity in the hats, of all things. DNA testing on the hat bands has now confirmed that "Bandit" and Terry are he same person. The crime occurred in the southern United States while Terry was considering a law enforcemnt career by checking out "Smokey". There is some indication that Terry may have been associating with Dom Deluise, Jackie Gleason, Sally Field, Lonnie Anderson, Dolly Parton and others. We will report back as this case develops.

In preparation for Rotary Area 7's Second Harvest Food Drive in March, 2010, please view the Peanut Butter Tower built for Willy Elliott-McRea by Johnson Studio, manufacturer of lighting fixtures, during their recent Second Harvest Food Drive". Peanut Butter and its source of protein is one of the major items on the list of suggested foods to donate to the needy. If you watch closely Willy appears near the end of the video.

Willy sent this to the Area 7 presidents and Rotary 2nd Harvest Food Bank council (Chuck Allen is our rep). We are in the process of putting together an area wide relay race with teams made up of Interact and Rotary members. We are attempting to have the Interact Clubs spearhead the project. I advised the Board that it is in the planning stages.

President Georgeann emailed the webmaster this photo of the Watsonville High Kids on their Ivy League tour. Not sure the kids are thinking they are "on the road" on the 40th anniversary of the death of Jack Kerouac this week.

This photo looks like it was taken in Old Yard part of Harvard Yard with famous statue of old John Harvard in the background in what that hippie Bob Dylan called "The green pastures of Harvard University." Hal Hyde who spent some time there would know. Cheers.

President Georgeann says she will send us some new photos from her "Field Trip" to the Troubadours recording session in Memphis, TN this past weekend where about 15 Troubadour fans from all over the Country and Canada participated and witnessed the Troubadours recording in the famous Sun Studios where Elvis Presley was discovered, and many other rock n roll names recorded - Johnny Cash, BB King, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison.

Not sure how but according to a recent email from Larry Cardon, Ed Banks convinced the Gilligan's Island crew to invite Watsonville Rotary on a cruise on Sunday, Sept 20 from 10:30 (sharp) until 2 pm. Good decision by Ed as inviting Club to join cast of Survivor on unknown island would be more stressful. Some details are clear: very reasonable price of $20 and meeting place is fuel dock at small boat harbor. Some details not so clear: did Ed get the $20 deal by using the Gilligan boat in photo above? Did Larry lean on his son the General to put this cruise together? Will there be a look alike contest for Gilligan, the Captain, the Professor, Ginger and Mary Ann? The grandest of all adobe buildings representing Northern California's rancho period is the two-story Castro Adobe near Watsonville. This hacienda features a spacious fandango room on the second floor and an original one-story cocina, one of only five such Mexican kitchens remaining in the state. With its long, two-story proportions and full-width open balcony, it is a distinctly Monterey-Colonial building that demonstrates the expansion to the countryside of this celebrated architectural form from its original urban setting, at the end of the Mexican era (1821-1848).
Our club will meet at the Adobe, have a box lunch and tour the Casa. It is located on Adobe Road, accessed at the intersection of Larkin Valley and Buena Vista. The Castro Adobe is 1/2 mile up Old Adobe road. Some of us will car pool from the Elks Club parking lot to keep the number of vehicles down. I will check out driving time. George Blumenthal has been acting chancellor of UC Santa Cruz since July 14th, 2006. Lots of people hope he sticks around as long as possible and is made permanent chancellor. Dr. Blumenthal is a UCSC professor of astronomy and astrophysics and has been a member of the UC Santa Cruz faculty since 1972. (Fred Witmer and Ed Hall were club presidents in 1972.) George is perhaps the most popular and approachable UCSC chancellor ever. He has chaired the UCSC Astronomy and Astrophysics Department and the Santa Cruz Division of the Academic Senate. In 2004-05 he served as chair of the UC systemwide Academic Senate, and he was faculty representative to the Board of Regents for the years 2003-05.

Peru Night is well attended

Not only Freedom and Watsonville Rotary but the medical community (medical companies reps, nurses, assistants, doctors and their families and Watsonville Hospital officers), probably totaling 250 people attended the festive June 6th event. The fame of the excellent BBQ tri tip has drawn more people to this event (Kudos to the crew: J.Kane III and son, David Hemrick, Manuel and Susana Osorio, Mario Luis, Georgeann Cowles, John Skinner - hope we didn't miss anyone - you know who you are).

Tables and chairs were set up by Bonnie House, many cheers to her and her team. Of course the serving team from the Freedom Rotary Club was impecable, a always. We have to thank the many Rotarians for donating so many gifts for the raffle, silent and live auctions. It was a wonderful display of colorful and valuable gifts, all arranged by our great leader Katie Gallegos and team (Sharon Jurach, Alya Ross, Dr. Ann Carroll, Georgiann, Mario, Iris Vasquez, Carol Turley, Mary Carroll). The music was donated by the already famous duo Skye Rendon and Dr. Lee Griffith.

When Live Auction time came, it was really **Live**. There was a lot of action when Terry Medina kept our attention and softened us up to contribute a big chunk of change for the Peru Project. Terry was superb as always; you had to be there to appreciate it.

Among the many spectacular donations were from Georgeann (Alaska Cabin for 1 wk), Dr.Manabe and L. Jameson (Dinner and beer for 12 at the Tied House), Watsonville Police ,i.e. Terry Medina (Patrol Car ride), Skye and Dr. G (Musical Duo), M.Vasquez/A.Carroll (Hawaii condo for 1 w). The night was an opportunity for the new generation to participate and help in any way they were requested: Carol's daughter Heather, and Miguel's nephew Blake Gillis stepped up at once. And thanks to our president Al Greeninger who inspired and supervised until the end.

Thank you to all of the Watsonville and Freedom Rotarians who support the Peru Dinner year after year. Miguel apologizes to those of you who also contributed but not listed.

(From Miguel vasquez) Keeping you informed of what is happening with Peru Project (where your donations and efforts go), 3 announcements:

We had a preliminary meeting of possible volunteers (RN, MDs and others) to go to Peru Project to be held in July 19-30 . There is still room for any rotarian to be part of it.
Equipment and supplies, that are collected by many rotarians (Monte Lewis, Rob Allen, Bonnie House) were packed and transported by truck/trailer driven by Larry Cardon all the way to a warehouse in Los Angeles, and set for shipping to Peru. (see picts)
Peru Night committee met. there is a lot of work in preparation for the dinner (june 6th), therefore we still need members and friends to help that day. Donations for the raffle and auctions are also being sought.

Freedom Rotary is coming to Watsonville Rotary!

At the next meeting of Watsonville Rotary, four Freedom Rotarians will be in the lobby from 11:45 to 12:15. Rodney Brooks and others will have tickets,sponsor forms, and other Casino Night materials..

Sponsoring. A great way to advertise your business. Even better if you provide a dealer wearing apparel that has your company logo.

Tickets. A great way to support our event and have a good time. You can have even more fun if you invite some friends to join you.
Tickets make excellent gifts to employees. They have a great time and, as employee rewards go, they are low cost.
Table sponsors frequently buy extra tickets. You only get two as a table sponsor.

Checks. Please bring checks to make purchases. That way you have a record for a tax deduction, if applicable, and we don't have to have change. Checks are made payable to the Freedom Rotary Foundation.

Business Cards. If you are a table sponsor, getting your business card will help us get your sign correct.

Thanks. Several of you have already sent in your money to be sponsors of Casino Night. Thanks to KBK, Ken miller, Jerry Fitzgerald, and Lewis & Associates are the ones I know about at the moment. Many of you are long time supporters. We are all very grateful.

Hats. Since Casino Night falls on March 17th it will be St. Patricks Day. In keeping with the St. Paddy's day theme, we will be wearing green hats.
